max_allowed_packet=10M

The maximum value you may specify is 1GB however setting it to a high amount (ie: 250mb), will not cause any performance issues because MySQL will only use that much if necessary.

NOTE: Make sure you have enough memory on your system to handle the increase in packet size or else you could potentially use swap space thus decreasing the performance of the query.
